SPAN: Thank you very much, ma, for granting us the opportunity to interview you despite your busy schedules. We would first like to know your biography?
Dr. Fatimah: I am an indigene of Kaduna State, born in Zaria in 1975. I started my education at Ahmadu Bello University Primary Staff School, attended FGGC Kazaure Secondary School in Kano State, and obtained my BSc, MSc, and PhD from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in 2001, 2008, and 2013 respectively. I also joined the Department of Pathology at the University of Virginia, USA, as part of an exchange visitor program in 2011, where I conducted my PhD research work.
I was posted to the Department of Human Physiology at ABU Zaria in 2002 for my NYSC services. Later, in 2004, I was employed as a Graduate Assistant in the same department and rose through the successive ranks to that of an Associate Professor in 2020.
SPAN: Your milestone achievement is one of the sustaining factors of this department. How did you come about it?
Dr. Fatimah: Every career mother is unique because of her ability to manage her career and family life. Ascending the career ladder as a mother and a wife gave me a clear sense of purpose and direction in life. The desire to grow personally and professionally was the mainstay of my achievement, but guidance from mentors and assistance from my colleagues made the overall goal overwhelming and more achievable.
SPAN: What mission do you have towards physiology here and the nation at large?
Dr. Fatimah: My mission for physiology and as a physiologist is to explore possible schemes towards curriculum development that will bridge the gap between theoretical physiology and applied physiology.
SPAN: What are the current challenges faced by human physiology in Nigeria?
Dr. Fatimah: Global rapid technological advancements pose challenging issues within the field of physiology and its applications. Thus, employment prospects are limited.
SPAN: What are the current challenges faced by human physiologists in Nigeria?
Dr. Fatimah: To ensure that applied physiology is utilized in diverse fields so that aspiring physiologists can function in various careers and enhance their employability.
SPAN: What is your philosophy about life?
Dr. Fatimah: Sincerity, dedication, and perseverance.
SPAN: Do you have mentors and motivators?
Dr. Fatimah: My mentors are Prof. I. A. Umar of the Department of Biochemistry, ABU Zaria, and Prof. A. Mohammed of the Department of Human Physiology, ABU Zaria.
Motivators: Interest and enthusiasm for the job and my interaction with students from different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
SPAN: Advice for young aspiring physiologists?
Dr. Dawud: Set your goal that is realistic and achievable; stay committed to your goal and maintain consistency in your efforts. Acquire entrepreneurial knowledge and skills.
SPAN: Share with us a little about your family?
Dr. Dawud: Married with two children.
